"What sort of wowsers have we become"

Since I've called out John Key for asking today's politicians to create another housing bubble, it's only fair I praise him when he (rarely) makes sense.

And since it's relevant, let's say the one good thing about his premiership: despite the scorn poured on him by his opponents for being (in Michael Cullen's words) "a rich prick," New Zealanders liked him for that. They saw this particular tall poppy as a good thing.

Which was a good thing. And as the primary personal beneficiary of that emotion, it's relevant to his recent observation about billionaires.

Talking during a leaders' debate about whether being a billionaire is "morally acceptable," he defended billionaires and wealth creation -- with unusual passion -- calling it "nuts" and "morally offensive" to view people as evil just because they have accumulated extreme wealth. "What sort of wowsers have we become," he said, if New Zealanders can celebrate athletes and musicians, but not successful businesspeople.

Indeed.
