I'm a word+music stan

The phrase "bucket list" comes from a 2007 movie. The origins of the words or phrases "mullet," "material girl," "jingoism," "grandfather clock," "rose-coloured spectacles," "pie in the sky," "spam," (to mean unwanted shit in your inbox) and "stan" (to mean an extremely dedicated (and sometimes problematic) fan) all come from songs -- that last one from the song "Stan" on a 2000 Eminem album.

Chris Dalla Riva has plunged into what these origins tell us about ourselves.

I think the origin of “stan” is a good example of what I was trying to get [with that]. The fact that we turned a character from an Eminem song into a common noun and a verb, reveals that we needed a word to describe crazed fandom of the 21st century. Songs, in short, not only have the ability to shape the way we think and act, but can point us to deeper trends.
Much, much more of this at Chris Dalla Riva's post, including info on where words like "hip hop," "zydeco," "and "reggae" emerged to describe whole genres of music. And on that, here's Toots ...
