This is undoubtedly true. Both history, and my own personal experience demonstrates that even if you’re strong and competent, you can’t control everything. A better strategy from a selfish perspective is not to subjugate people and have total control (with total control comes more responsibility to manage everything effectively), but instead seek out allies who have interests you can align with.
