One thousand reasons to despise the Electoral Finance Act

Here are one-thousand reasons not to have home addresses on political literature: one-thousand knives stuck into Family First's Bob McCroskie's lawn:

As a couple of bloggers have noticed, this is precisely why Libertarianz have placed the following statement on their billboards:

We figured that since Helen Elizabeth Clark, of 4 Cromwell St, Mt Eden, had introduced a law regulating political speech one-year-in-three, including a rule that all such speech must include the name and address of the person who "authorises" it -- in McCroskie's case his Value Your Vote website -- she needs to personally understand the chilling effect of such a law.

After all, if she's going to write laws placing at risk the homes of people who criticise her, people whose homes don't come complete with police protection...

NB: The photo comes from the Herald, who for their own reasons chose to digitally remove the number of Helen Clark's house, while leaving the address above. Go figure.  [Hat tip

The McCroskie incident is appalling, and indicates well what an invasion of our privacy the EFA is (remembering that a civilised, free society is a movement toward privacy, it is obvious we are rapidly traveling in the opposite direction). Leighton Smith is going to bring it up on NewsTalkZB this morning, so I hope it gets plenty more coverage.

Nice detail. But why is Clarks house number missing on the sign?

Classic example of "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it"

Bob's website is all about encouraging government to interfere in people's lives from a religious viewpoint - He opposes the government intrusion of the EFA but welcomes it elsewhere!

Dinther, the Herald blurred it out!

The house number is not missing from the sign - that photo is from the Herald who digitaly removed the number before publishing. You might like to ask yourself why.

With the price of scrap metal- especially stainless steel- I wouldn't mind a gift of a thousand knives!

I really REALLLY want to feel sorry for Bob. But I can't. Maybe when he gives a shit about my right to view whatever I please and engage in whatever activity I like with consenting adults, I might care about what dumbfuck feminists do to his precious lawn. Until then, sorry Bob, but fuck you.
