Joy! by Llew Summers

Joi de Vivre, by Christchurch sculptor Llew Summers, in a setting that's just made for such unabashed exuberance.

Beryl Cook would undoubtedly approve.

The sculpture would look better if the hands had three fingers and one thumb. Those hands just appear to have too many fingers. I thought it was a rule that cartoon characters should only have three fingers.

It's also a little known fact that the model used for this sculpture was Lindsay Perigo's sister.

Something about the frumpiness of this scultpture, Beryl Cook's work, and Lindsay Perigo, reminds me of Raymond Briggs' work.

It's Absolute joy to behold. Perfect as it is and makes one feel joyous. That's the thing. Like all those moments on Sound of Music with arms flung wide open in exuberance.
