"Earth Hour" nonsense

I love reading sharp, pithy correspondence. There's an art to it at which the likes of Don Boudreaux excel. So I really enjoyed this short response by NOT PC reader FreeMack to the contents of the latest newsletter sent to him by the Waikato Chamber of Commerce.

Hi Wayne

I read your latest newsletter from the Waikato Chamber of Commerce with some concern.
I find it very odd that a business organisation would be promoting such a silly, anti-business idea as Earth Hour.

There is much commentary available as to why it is a foolish idea.

Here is just one example.

If you look at a satellite image of the earth at night, you will notice that North Korea celebrates earth hour, every hour, every night.  Is that what you what you would have us aspire to?

I suggest that if you do indeed represent commerce, than you should reconsider your support for Earth Hour.

I am sure FreeMack doesn't really believe that North Korea is in economic doggy doo doo because they have an extended version of "Earth Hour". It is therefore not a very convincing argument for not having an annual event that raises awareness of climate change.

With the insidious and misleading politicization of global warming science by contrarians a lot of push back by the those who accept the scientific consensus is essential.

From a business standpoint isn't energy conservation and cost reduction a good thing ?

No. You do that when you run out of ideas. Of course cost containment is important, but that has nothing to do with energy conservation.

John, our solar system has so much energy, why would you want to conserve it?

PS: I assume you know E=mcc; in simple terms: you cannot destroy energy. We're just converting energy to the betterment of mankind.

Agree. My kids are brainwashed at school about 'Earth Hour'. Its a joke (like 'global warming').

They rush around the house & switch off lights (funny how they will not turn off the TV or their lap top computers) while I rush around turning the lights back on. At least we all get fit running around the house!

I think that pdf is more than convincing.

Of course it is. As is all cost-cutting. Those few corporates in Auckland for example, who do not turn off their signs at night have more money than sense.

environmentalism has nothing to do with advocacy for increasing corporate profits.

Hilarious. As if one of the major goals of the entire AGW nonsense were NOT political control... As if there were any other reason that AGW still enjoys any support than misleading science and utter politicization of science...

Too funny. Progressives are shameless in the rationalizations they are willing to spout to have the chance to tell others how to use their property and live their lives.

Interesting that you would find energy efficiency leading to cost savings "too funny". You've obviously never run a business.

I am bemused at the old money that is being held on to with two hands. If a single PDF is all it takes to give your belief conviction, test them against this.
