The junket

Yeah, I can understand why folk get outraged at parliamentarians swanning around the globe on the taxpayer’s credit card, fine wining and dining on a parliamentary junket.

It looks like a total waste of money, doesn’t it.

But I I might paraphrase Mark Twain for a moment, remember that no man's life, liberty, or property are safe while the legislature is in session. So isn’t the best thing to avoid them being in session as long as physically possible?

It might look like a waste of money, but looked at it with Mark Twain’s glasses on, it starts to look like a bargain.

So much so I’d be happy if those half-dozen members stayed away much longer … and took more of their colleagues with them.

Say around 121 of them altogether. For several months at a time …

I remember Leon Lowe of the Free Market Foundation saying he'd double civil servants wages on the condition they did nothing and left us alone. It may make economic sense but I hate the thought of paying something for nothing.
