The Labour Party announced new policy today committing it
- to raise taxes on anyone with the temerity to earn more than a garbage collector;
- to ban New Zealanders selling their land or shares to anyone who doesn’t look like us; and
- to encourage the Reserve Bank to substitute its production of printed paper for the production of the real goods that New Zealand really needs.
Which is to say that it’s abandoned common sense in favour, respectively, of envy, xenophobia, and the economic alchemy of inflationism.
No wonder Winston Peters felt so much at home when he was sitting around their cabinet table.
UPDATE 1: According to Martyn Bradbury, making Labour look like NZ First is “making Labour stand for something.”
Martyn Bradbury is 45 36 12 take your pick.
UPDATE 2: This comment from Ruth is worth repeating:
All Goff needed to say was:
"We know NZers can not afford to purchase desirable farmland in their own
country, so Labour is going to create the economic conditions in which they can."
How uplifting and positive that would have been. Instead he chose to drag everyone down.
The conditions required to allow a foreigner to buy land are nothing short of blackmail already.
Ain’t that the sad truth.

Well that is the problem. As bad as Key is he keeps NZ away from this banana republic voodoo economic crap.
Phil Goff would fast track NZ's economy to resemble a UK car plant circa 1978. Build bloody trains who believes this any more?
Again as bad as Key is if Goff was running the country you would actually have to leave.
is that overweight hairy screecher really 45???
Now, now... Martyn - with a y - despite the hairline, is 36.
Tim, stop fuck'n covering for Martyn. He is a fucking loser, unproductive, virgin that sits there advocating leftist policies of wealth redistribution. The fucker should get out and get laid first before telling others to folk out more money for the so called unproductive poor he thinks that the business people of this world are ripping them off.
A fucking 45 year of useless leecher from the society, doesn't want to produce but want to take from those who earned them.
Go and jump off Grafton bridge, useless leecher. Does Paula Benet know that Martyn refuses to work, but just bludge from taxpayer?
I was of the opinion that Oblamalama's idea to slap tariffs on Chinese tires was a particularly bad idea. I've gotta say, though, that refusing suitcases of money from foreigners when they offer it... That's even stupider. :/
I've just come back from a four day business trip: with politicans like this waiting in the wings, and not much better in power, it makes one wonder what is the point of being in business in the West circa 2010.
Sometimes I feel like opting out and enjoying a life in the sidelines. I'm sick and tired of being forced to fund the failed wet dreams of Nanny Statists, and watching generation after generation being sacrificed to the ghetto of State welfare.
And you guys hate Roger Douglas???
George
@Anon - Roger did the right things (for a while) for reasons of his own, not necessarily to advance the cause of liberty. We salute Rogernomics but his ultimate motivation was utilitarian rather than libertarian.
Phil Goff’s speech is a typical rant by any politician in opposition during tough times and was right on cue I believe. My guess is Winston Peters wrote this some time ago (possibly 12 months ago) and Phil traded him a pack of Pall Mall and a bottle of Black Label Johnnie Walker for it (no kidding). During times like these both socialist Red and socialist Blue (Coke and Pepsi) depending who is in opposition would have spewed this type of drivel. Fortunately people are getting a little wary of this déjà vu phenomenon.

Goff also announced that alcohol is bad for all of us, such that it was criminal not to raise taxes. He is going to lower taxes on the likes of mung beans and lentils which are so good for us.
How far he has fallen. Once Goff was with Douglas, once he cheerfully backed the sales of Telecom, Air NZ and Postbank. Once he introduced meaningful university tuition fees against the sponging Marxism of the student unions. Once he had a backbone.
Presumably he has decided that it's time to hoover up the NZ First vote aka Alliance retard vote.
Of course he wont get much scrutiny because the mainstream media is so overflowing with economic illiteracy (and a desire to dumb things down to the level of a sports game for 10 year olds).
@Scott
And overflowing with wannabe Labour SMP's as well let us not forget.
