Strange O’Clock

“Interviewing” me yesterday, Jimmy Jangles asked a great question.

“Where’s the strangest place you’ve ever had a beer?”

I fear my own answers weren’t anywhere near strange enough. But I know you can do better.

So, what are some of the stranger places that you’ve ever had a beer?

Once had a beer in a small cantina in the Sierra Madre mountains about 100 miles north of Mexica City. Was in a little out-of-way village about 10 miles off the beaten path. Anyway, the beers cost about $.04 cents and the cantina had a dirt floor with chickens and goats walking around and Mexicans passed out on the floor. I was buying drinks for all about a dollar per round. Spoke do spanish and they spoke no English, but we sure did enjoy each others jokes, ha! It was both weird and enjoyable. Came your way via Crusader Rabbit.

In a cave, about 400 metres underground.

Mozambique, in a little concrete block pumphouse while having the shit mortared out of us.
Warm and flat, but beer never tasted so good since.

Not beer, but wine. my mate at ST Peters in Cambridge was a hell of a lock picker; he managed to open the wine cupboard at the back of the chapel - and then there was light, and it came in red in gallon sized bottles. 14 and wasted, those were the days.

Standing on top of an elephant in Hua Hin. Several weeks ago.

Needed alcohol and the shop only sold beer. My first full can ever.

A McDonalds in Rome. But Europeans wouldn't find it that unusual.

Canada.

Not so much where, but like Michael above, the strangeness results from context. On the ferry between Hull and Zeebrugge, Belgium. So, a fully licensed big-ass boat between two nations extremely well known for their excellent beers, and what did they have? Goddamned Heineken. So I had some. I then discovered they did actually have Bishop's Finger in bottles, but the best they had to represent Belgium was Stella Artois. Disgraceful.

@Matt: There is no beer in Canada. I've checked. :-)

A sip from a warm can of Lion Red at the Great Pyramid shared between messmates. It had been saved by itself in the mess fridge for 3 months, travelled all way from NZ to Crete and beyond via the Suez. It even rode on a camel up to the pyramid.

As always, a shocking beer. A least I have the pic somewhere to show 'They're drinking our beer here'.
