What I felt when I first heard the news of Senator Edward Kennedy being diagnosed with malignant tumours was summarised very well by Blair Mulholland:

Damned seizure didn't quite finish him off. Bugger.
The second was a paraphrase of a comment made by Evelyn Waugh when Randolph Churchill underwent treatment after a similar diagnosis:
It would be a triumph of modern science -- to find the only part of Edward Kennedy that isn't malignant and remove it.

He has the astonishing distinction of losing to Jimmy Carter, after the American people had heard of Carter and seem him in action.

Obviously I hope Kennedy makes a full recovery, but yes, gosh, dreadful man.
Holidayed on Chappaquiddick once, (just up the road from the bridge), tiny, isolated spot that it is. From memory, the bridge was in disrepair and the place was quite eerie ..
The bridge was in a state of disrepair on July 19, 1969, too ;)
Don't forget the saga of William Kennedy Smith. He was accused of raping a young woman at the Kennedy "compound" some years back. Godd lawyering got him acquited, but the real interesting part of the case was the evidence submitted by the complainant. She reckoned that Ted Kennedy was wandering around the house naked below the waist drinking whiskey at the time. She reckoned he was uninterested in assisting her. A pattern of behaviour?
