The colourful MP who served as Minister for Maori Affairs between 1999 and 2002 said he was sick of Maori activism in the country.
"Non-Maori have been very tolerant of all the crap they've had to put up with and it's all just bloody garbage. I heard someone say they were going to make a treaty claim on the air we breathe. I mean, for Christ's sakes, it's all just garbage. The Treaty of Waitangi seems to be the antidote for everything from tagging to wagging school and colonisation which is absolute cultural bullshit.

I am starting to seriously consider the prospect that New Zealand is not actually worth saving...

I was in a long queue to get my road licenses renewed last week.
The office resembled nothing to be being in NZ and I counted a total of 20 people (staff and general public). Of all these, only myself and a gentleman in front of me were European.
I tapped him on his shoulder and asked him "how it felt to be a minority in his own country." He gave me a double take with a look of absolute shock at my comment. I could see the hamster wheel smoking (ooooo such a racist).
He coughed and said he'd never thought of it. I promptly suggested that he walk around more often with his eyes open.
When I finally got some service from a switched on Maori girl. I said exactly the same comment to her. She wasn't the least bit offended, quite the opposite and she was very quick to to reply
"I hear ya."
How did you know it was 'his own country"? Was it because he was white?

I always like Dave Henderson's response during the time the IRD were doing him over, and friends were suggesting he leave for Australia: "Fuck them," he said. "This is my home!"
That's how I feel too. I don't intend to be driven out by arseholes.
The 'easy out' of Australia has not been good for New Zealand; too many good people have left rather than stay and fix things -- and few places in the world should be easier to fix than this one, and even fewer worth it.
And note that Dover is just leaving 'part time.'
It is most doubtful whether NZ is repairable.
Life is very short. It's better to enjoy what's left of it. If seeking enjoyment and being better able to retain the fruits of ones efforts is easier o/seas, then o/seas is the place to be. Stuff saving the collective NZ. Let them make and keep their ruination.

NZ is known by the largest corporates in the world as one of the BEST places to invest in. Billions come through here evey day - and it's increasing all the time.And it's a great place to live and bring up kids.

New Zealand's right wing could do worse than take a leaf from their American counterparts who at least have some liking for their own country and regard threats to move to Canada for political reasons with the contempt they deserve. A change to a government better than John Key will offer would see many NZers come home from Aus and elsewhere around the world. It's a great place to live.
With Rudd getting seriously socialist (goodbye to Aus's equivalent of the ECA), PC (sorry, now here comes a bunch of money) and do-gooding (banning plastic bags) - the good life over there won't look so rosey.
It is *our* home - not the wankers who belong in the DPRK or 6 ft under - which means fewer people with less money can make a bigger difference.

Andrew, there is no chance of a better government than Key's. The chances are 60/40 he'll be PM. Else Clark will be PM. So don't expect the diaspora to be going back over to NZ any time soon. The best NZ brains and skills will be gone and will stay away. Life is too short to waste on fighting idiots.

Peter, That is the argument like a collectivist. There is no to sacrifice self for New Zealand. Don't expect anyone to do it. It just isn't going to get anyone anywhere. Those New Zealanders actually want what they are getting. No need to stay there and get a dose yourself. Find somewhere else. Try it. better.
There are plenty of 'best and brightest' who come here from offshore to work in foreign corporates who end up staying. These are people who eschew salaries in the millions to live here. Becasue it is a great place to live and bring up kids.

Big generalisation - and a sentiment that those Jews who left Germany in the late 30s would vehemently disagree with.
However, there's an element of truth with which I wouldn't disagree with regard to our own circumstances. In a benevolent society such as ours, one's happiness and success is indeed dependent upon one's choices .. but you'd be a fool to dismiss the outcome of systematic policies of social engineering.
