I'm just listening to a fascinating interview with law lecturer Bill Hodge, a constitutional expert from Auckland University, talking to Leighton Smith about why he headed out on Sunday to his first street protest since 1977: John Boscawen's third Auckland protest against the Electoral Finance Act. "Power corrupts," Hodge explained to Smith, "and I'm afraid power has corrupted the government... The government is trying to shut down debate."
"Essentially what the act will deny voters is the freedom to be informed, so that they vote intelligently," Dr Hodge told protesters yesterday. "The law is just bad legislation, and I feel Dr [Michael] Cullen has failed in his role as Attorney-General and should not continue in that office."
