Tying your tubes for Gaia

Tim Blair makes note of a nutter who has had herself sterilised for Gaia," rendering herself permanently infertile so as to avoid producing another human being who "uses more food, more water, more land, more fossil fuels, more trees and produces more rubbish, more pollution, more greenhouse gases."
Having children is selfish [says the nutter]. It’s all about maintaining your genetic line at the expense of the planet.
The Free Will blogger observes of this voluntary act of natural selection,
While most parents view their children as the ultimate miracle of nature, Toni seems to see them as a sinister threat to the future. It's the only logical conclusion of their ideology, one not shared by any other living thing in nature: existence is wrong.
One might be tempted to invite her to draw the obvious conclusion from her lunacy and to make the ultimate sacrifice for Gaia.

If only we could insist that she and her ilk leave the rest of us free from having their own misanthropy enforced upon us.

Gosh, Peter...this is beyond any sort of ...ummmmmm...rationality.

She is certainly under a misapprehension!

Having children is actually selfless - for a number of reasons.

You, PC,live in a State of Grace. Working when you feel like it, and spending the rest of your time going to the theatre and jetting around the country partying. When I read this blog I often feel you are ungrateful.

You don't have to worry if your teenage daughter is being taken advantage of, or if your teenage son is going to get stabbed or run-over at a party.

A friend of mine said the other day that if she had known how much of her own interests she would have had to sacrifice for her kids she would never have had them.I sometimes feel that way.

I'm going to write a guest post about it one day.

Dang typos...
Don't worry about seeming "ungrateful" PC--after all, you're contributing to the upkeep of countless other people's kids. ;-)

Anon- That is why having kids is entirely voluntary.

Nobody puts a gun to your head and makes you do it.

The taxpayer will be forced to subsidize your breeding, so please feel free not to!

The fruit loop in the article should be praised for not propogating her DNA!

I'd agree with Oswald, her ideology is screwed, but if only ALL those who held these views did this - within a generation it would a bunch of grey haired childless people. One problem nearly solved...

Anon is wrong though, having children is not selfless - it is done out of desire. The initial act and the conscious choice to bear them and look after them sates, for many, a deep biological and psychological desire. The results are selfless, but the motive is not. Nature fails if it relies on selfless acts.

No taxpayer has subsided my 'breeding'. In fact my children's father has probably subsidised *yours*, given that he pays over 100k in tax per annum.

Fucken right wing nutjob. No wonder I support John Key.

Yes, that must be the explanation all right.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work that way. The Skoptzy men gleefully hacked their balls off (women removed their breasts) in adherence to their faith, and their twisted religion still grew in the 18th and 19th centuries.

In regards to this article "Tying your tubes for Gaia", its definitely good that these morons are choosing to sterilise themselves in order to avoid having children. The unfortunate living carbon-footprint offspring would be the target of much undeserved hatred and guilt.

Nope, I earn too much to get Welfare for Families.

Shit for brains...

Between the 'selfless' Saint Anon and the Mad Steriliser, it seems both having children and not having children is the path to perfection. Each to their own I have always thought - and don't glamorise your choice either way. You are pleasing yourself, not saving the world.

With any luck this will catch on. Maybe Al Gore and the Green Party in NZ can lead the way here in sterilizing themselves to save the planet.

Add to that Peter Dunne and NZ First to take a hit for the planet.

Hehe, totally agree George.

Having children is nothing but ego. There are plenty of adoptable children out there. Don't breed or buy while other die!
