I think that all the lefties in the world would have jumped up and down in joy that the North Korean’s government has given a finger to the West.
A familiar comment from the lefties goes something like the following:
"The US or any Western government has no right to tell other nations not to acquire nuclear weapons".
The US & other western nations can defend themselves from rogue states like North Korea or Iran if they ever launch a nuclear missile attack, however it is the defenceless nation that is vulnerable to such weapons. This is the reason why the US & UK in particular don't want state such as North Korea or Iran to acquire such weapons and it is the right of every global citizens to demand such restraint from those rogue states via the voice of powerful nations such as the US or UK. Mad-man such as Kim Il will not surrender to "economic sanctions" or peace activists "protest marching".
Now, the arms race has just formally started for the Asian region. Japan would want to get its own nuclear weapons and they can build one in less than 24 hours. This would alarm the Chinese about a nuclear state Japan and they themselves would accelerate their production of nuclear weapons. This in turn make the Indians feel uncomfortable with the level of nuclear stock that the Chinese are building, which forces them to build more of their own as deterrent to the Chinese. The Pakistani's would see the Indian increasing their nuclear arsenals, would do the same. This will in turn trigger the Russians to hold on to their nukes or perhaps increase them as they and the Pakis see each other as Potential enemies. The Taiwanese on the other hand will have an excuse to build their own nukes. It wouldn't be too long before the Chinese or the Taiwanese started building plutonium nuclear processing plants in the Pacific Islands and that is a very scary scenario.
