The good drone

I confess, when I first saw this I thought it was some sort of online spoof.  Apparently not.

Wow!

The technology is almost there. But what’s the big holdup?

Ah. Of course.

Not only prompt delivery but a cool travel container to keep!

There are heaps of great applications that I have seen:

- Surf rescue where a quadcopter drops off a lightweight flotation device near the swimmer
- Search and rescue to search difficult to reach places
- 3D site mapping where by the use of photogrametry an accurate 3D model is created of a site.
- Sheep and cattle herding. Yes, autonomous quadcopters can do that job too.

The word drone has a very negative image. Best not to use it because these things can be incredibly useful.

The 'Ah, of course' is, I assume, supposed to be a sigh at the need for regulations - but this is a thing that could not possibly work if it was not regulated.

Flying drones over private property, especially in a world that honoured ambitions of unfettered private rights to property could not be possible. I for one would certainly take great glee at shooting them down. It's why I loath the concept of flying cars and dream that should they be invented I would buy a quad-20mm to shoot them down with.

High flying commercial airliners can be annoying enough to those of us who wish to enjoy our land and only grudgingly accept the presence (let alone sometimes the existence) of other people - low buzzing artificial insects would deservedly attract the attention they deserve.

So if people were ever to desire to permit such an operation to succeed it would have to protected by laws least the anarchic desire of individuals to please themselves routinely destroy deliveries.

Wow! Your property must extend to the bowels of the Earth and to the furthest reaches into the sky above, right out past the edge of the solar system.

Wouldn't that be great? And why not?
