So, what’s been happening?

So, what’s been happening?

I’ve ben away at a place called Te Maika—without phone, without power, but with a generous supply of friends and alcohol—so I have no idea  what’s been going on in the world, except in my own little part of it. All I have to impart  therefore is that Kawhia Harbour has made more history than it’s been able to consume locally, that Hilary Mantel and Dashiel Hammett write damned well, and that you can’t make a martini without ice cubes—but it’s worth trying.

So what’s been happening with you?

In the face of crony captalist lobbying, I've been arguing there must never be a compulsory KiwiSaver.

Other than that, soaking up the rays in the Mahau Sound, being battered by the odd storm, and enjoying being away from the work time weekday ban on alcohol consumption in the Hubbard household ;)

Same old story. Increased government spending, increased regulation and calls for even more regulation.
Kind of boring. Fun thing that stood out was that Belgian news papers won their suit against Google.Google complied by totally de-listing them and now they given Google permision to index their sites as the bottom fell out if their business model. Now the Irish decided to try it on too.

Well I've been a lay-about in Saigon; but am now off to mudhutville 40km north of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, to train volunteer Cambodian teachers how to teach ESL in a school for orphans. Still, I get a hammock, cold good beer, a gazillion degrees, and of course the satisfaction of helping the poor little bastards. Happy New Year to you & Carol.

Just been doing what I guess used to be traditional, eg, take the kids to the beach, have a BBQ, take them to a park, teach them to ride a bike etc. Probably sounds really boring to some, but is actually very rewarding.

The Pope says 2013 will be peaceful and that he's tired of "unregulated capitalism." He needs to get out of the closet more.

You *can* make a martini without ice cubes, but you need a freezer, and enough time for your gin, vermouth, olive brine (if you're me, and like them dry'n'dirty) to get as cold as they possibly can. Then you make it very quickly. You can still stir. Shaken is for heathens. ;)

Sorry to be boring, but I've had the flu since before new year's day.... I had fireworks planned for new year's eve, but couldn't even manage that. Still under the weather but I'm really looking forward to getting better so I can enjoy some summer. Been reading 'At Home' by Bill Bryson.... A great buy for $9.99 on Kindle!

Happy New Year all! :) - Dave Mann

Just had a week or so in Queenstown and the surrounding area with family, very relaxing. Drank Epic Zythos and Emerson 1812, smoked a Cuban cigar (which didn't agree with me).

Three nights ago had dinner with a former mayor from up your way who spoke of his motorcycle journey from Alaska to Argentina:

Back at work today.
