Earthquake

The 7.0 quake off Opunake was reported to have been felt all the way north up to Te Kuiti. I didn’t feel it myself—and to be fair, we’re not in a building that would stand too many earthquakes—but a friend felt it in his tall building in downtown Auckland.

Hope everyone’s okay.

The unusual feature, as felt here in Wellington, was the time it went on for. Sam was reading in bed next to me. I was dozing off. Robert next door and David down stairs. Usually there's a shake and before you've had chance to decide what to do it's over. But in this instance there was time for me to awaken, for Sam and I to talk about the mirror continuing to rattle, Robert to appear and join the conversation and David to climb the stairs. He said the warning rumble had been unusually extended too. I reckon things shook for a good 30-40 seconds. But not violently.

Yes, I was working late high up in a tall building in the Auckland CBD. The building was making all sorts of noises for about 20 seconds, but it was not shaking.Having been in Christchurch for many quakes I knew what it was, but I just thought it was a small one off Mission Bay like the one a few years ago.

In Christchurch we looked at each other, said, "that was a bit sloshier than usual," and went back to sleep.

Oh, and Kia Kaha Wellington :-)

I had arrived at my parents' house in Wanganui 15 min earlier. The house seemed to move back and forth horizontally for about 30 sec. The motion was enough to stop the pendulum of their grandfather clock.

For once, we managed to miss an earthquake. Didn't feel it here in Geraldine. Though a bit worried as the painters are just finishing re-plastering and painting our Marlborough Sounds house after cracks from the 5.3 out of Picton about eight months ago.
