Ten centuries in five minutes

Here’s a great animated map showing Europe’s changing borders over the last millennia.  There’s nothing so impermanent as a border. Or an empire. [Hat tip Scott Powell]

HINT: Pause the video and drag the slider along manually to see it in all its glorious detail.

Seeing how vast the are of the Golden Horde was at one point reminds me of one game of Medieval Total War I played - I was the Turks, managed to get control of eastern Russia and knew at any time the Mongols would show up so had a MASSIVE defensive force stationed there. When they did - with about 12,000 men I had a force of about 15,000 and a 5 hour battle ensued - I finally won and essentially wiped them out in one engagement! Still have that battle stored somewhere :)

Such a shame history is so ignored nowadays, unless it is structuralist views of power relations, race and gender.

My thoughts are for what it's worth

Will the United Nations try to preserve the status quo as much as possible
Changes in borders will not be as frequent

Video not available. Why do people put up videos then withdraw them.
We need to be able to download these videos. You tube has low grade videos and is a low grade organisation.
