Fiji?

I have to confess I have no idea what the hell is going on in Fiji.

But that puts me in good company. No one else seems to either.

I don't know either, but as far as I can tell it's like deciding whether you want a lethal dose of Ebola or necrotizing fascitis. The military strongman, or the Prime Minister who wanted to pardon the military strongmen who threw the last coup? The only sane answer in both cases is c) none of the above.

The only people I feel sorry for in this whole squalid mess, are the very people who depend on tourism and will see their livelihoods go down the crapper - again.

30 minutes to go? Is Fiji in our time zone?

Um I am moved enough on this issue to ask who the hell cares about Fiji?

Fiji has just been having a coup, that's all. Facillitated by our own Winston Peters no less.

It's very hard to tell what's going on when the NZ media tells us so little about the key figures in contemporary Fiji politics.

Vice President Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi might be able to broker a truce again, as he did in January. He was seated next to Bainimarama at the rugby. He is an educated liberal who is widely respected in Fiji.

One thing Fiji does have is media freeom and, thanks to David Robie, some well-trained young journalists with experience of covering political events since the 2000 coup. For more information on the latest developments, Fiji Times, Fiji Sun and Fijilive are worth a read (all online). Fijilive has a discussion forum, probably dominated by ex-pats.
