Atlas, Rand and Brangelina

Oh Gawd. Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged -- the "second most influential book for Americans today after the Bible" according to a 1991 Library of Congress survey -- is now looking closer to the screen than ever before, and Brangelina are tipped to be playing the leads.

I'm not sure how either Angelina Jolie or Brad Pitt could play somebody with a brain, which is what a decent rendition would require. But in any case I'm not sure that a decent rendition is possible in today's 'day-of-the-zombies' film culture.

I think I'd rather not have the thing filmed at all than contemplate the disaster that it will almost inevitably be.

"Artistic licence" will result in John Galt being an underprviledged socialist comrade, Rearden being the head of a government department and instead of a packet of cigarettes with the dollar sign, there will be a health bar with a heart foundation tick...

I agree! I am also afraid - I cant think of anybody I would like to see cast in these roles. As we know, Ayn had the final say in what was acceptable for The Fountainhead, and kept a very tight rein on the dialogue. Who will be doing it for Atlas? Somebody qualified I hope!

You need look no further than Ralph Fiennes for John Galt. He's your man.

come on. they have just been voted the most beautiful couple in the world. when people see them in atlas shrugged they will think libertarianism is a thing for beautiful people and sign up in droves. of their own free will. what could be better than that ;-)

I always thought Lanced Armstrong(the cyclist)would make a great Hank Rearden.Fits the Ayn Rand heroe profile perfectly and she had very definite ideas about what the heroes and villians should look like
Phillip Readen:Kevin Spacey, both whiney and sinister at the same time.
John Galt:Edward Norton.
Dagny Taggart:Urma thurman
Dr Richard Sadler: Christofer Walken, pure evil.
If I was going to cast jolie she might make an excellent Lilian Readen.
Hugh Atkin:Gary Ssinese, although he would also make a great villian maybe swap with Christofer Walken for Dr Richard Sadler.
Dennis Hopper as Wesley Mooch.
I cant see it being crammed into a single movie or even mini series, and still having the unvealing of the mistory suspencefull, inevitibly the movie will dwell on some parts of the book and jump completly over other parts.Atlas Shrugged should be made into a full length TV series.
