Check out Frank Lloyd Wright’s Guggenheim Museum in New York, all set up ready for a new exhibition. “Our ramps are now covered,” says the museum, “with over 100 works by 48 artists, including Marc Chagall, Robert Delaunay, Vasily Kandinsky, Fernand Léger, Kazimir Malevich, and Pablo Picasso.”

The building is magnificent. The stuff inside has always been mostly crap.
ReplyDeleteThe building is magnificent on its own, but a lousy place to look at art. You have a choice of two distances close, or far away. You cannot step back and find the optimal viewing distance for an individual work. And I cannot standing looking at art standing on a slope. For viewing art I give it an "F", so much for form follows function.
ReplyDeleteThe slope of the ramps is a problem. However I did not find that the bulding overpowered the art, although your photographs make it seem as if it should.
ReplyDeleteIf the scale of a building was going to overpower the art inside we would of course immediately close the Louvre.
