Don't play it again, Sam.

Q: Can Sam Neill act?

Answers on a postcard, please. With evidence. Highlights from appearances at previous Labour Party conferences will not be accepted. [Hat tip G-Man Inc.]

  1. He's entirely competent, though it's often hard to tell considering the pig-choking amount of shit on his resume.

  2. Oh I don't know. He played a convincing corpse in Hunt for Red October - and that was before he was shot...

  3. The best actors can make you empathise with a character no matter how dastardly, and Sam Neill can't even get you to empathise when he's playing a good guy. Case in point Dead Calm: There was no way the idea of him being married to Nicole Kidman was believable, and when Billy Zane finally nails her (or so he thinks) you find yourself actually cheering. Or was that just seeing NK topless? Hang on...

Anyway, far too brooding and stiff. He does well when playing a villain, but that's it.

  4. He starred in Jurrasic Park (biggest blockbuster of 1992) and The Piano (second biggest art film of 1992, behind Schindler's List).

While all his co-stars, directors, special effects and audio technicians, writers, etc. got multiple nominations (and a few awards) in everything from AFI to the Oscars, he got none.

We welcome thoughtful disagreement.
But we do (ir)regularly moderate comments -- and we *will* delete any with insulting or abusive language. Or if they're just inane. It’s okay to disagree, but pretend you’re having a drink in the living room with the person you’re disagreeing with. This includes me.
PS: Have the honesty and courage to use your real name. That gives added weight to any opinion.
