King Taufa Tupou 4th, banned the practice of whale hunting in the late 1970s, perhaps due to international pressures. I think those pressures were related to economic aids. No aids if whale-hunting was to continue and I think that the King had to choose.

Greenpeace mentioned on their website, that Tonga was a good example of protecting the whales for benefits of the tourism industry (whalewatching), however I am suspicious about this claim, because whale-watching operations don't create many jobs in the Kingdom Island, besides tourists (mainly from US) are there to have a good time and not solely plan their trip based on watching whales, because they can do that at more luxurious places around the world and not on an island which is a 3rd world. I think that Greenpeace just want to hug the whales period.Falafulu Fisinoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11906042.post-1349509047907705692010-01-08T06:19:24.601+13:002010-01-08T06:19:24.601+13:00Interesting about the whales.
Latest developmen...Interesting about the whales.

Latest development has to be that outstanding piece of seamanship by the skipper of the trimaran (once known as "Earthrace") who managed to steer his vessel right under the bow of an on-coming ship. Now he's busy blaming the other crew for the inevitable result of his magnificent navigation. This isn't the first time he's collided with another vessel at sea either. Last time someone got drowned. Great record.

LGM

LGMLGMnoreply@blogger.com
