It wasn't traditionally done by the Jews. So yes, it did become more of an issue when Christianity became the state religion.<br /><br />Secondly, the date of Christmas has nothing to do with any pagan ceremonies, although that one coincided would have helped ease pagans into the idea. It is calculated from observing that Zechariah was told that his wife would conceive a son on the day of Yom Kippur - John the Baptist. Elsewhere, we are told that John the Baptist is six months older than Jesus. Assuming a standard 9 month pregnancy, we get a date 15 months from Yom Kippur - December 25th!
